Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart has expressed unwavering confidence that the team can end its nine-season trophy drought this year.
Despite facing criticism and a disappointing 10th-place finish last season, Maart believes the Amakhosi are on the right track under new coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Currently, they sit sixth in the Betway Premiership, with six points from three matches, and are eyeing glory in multiple competitions including the league, Carling Knockout, and Nedbank Cups.
Ahead of their CUFA Cup clash against Marumo Gallants this Sunday, Maart highlighted the team’s improved performance and the strategic approach of the coaching staff.
“Anything is possible; it will take hard work,” he stated, emphasizing a notable shift in the team’s style of play. He noted that both players and coaches have become more aggressive, which he sees as a positive sign for their trophy aspirations.
Maart also pointed out a fresh mentality instilled by Nabi’s technical team.
“They have to bring that mentality to us… There are no favorites for anyone,” he explained.
This renewed focus has sparked determination among players to rise to challenges despite external scrutiny. At 29 years old, Maart has faced his share of criticism since joining from Sekhukhune United but remains undeterred.
“I don’t take note of or know about [the criticism] because I’m not a lot on social media,” he shared.
The Amakhosi’s ambitions are bolstered by recent performances, with new signings showing promise and contributing to a more cohesive unit. The fans’ hopes are high as they anticipate a turnaround in fortunes for the club that last lifted silverware in 2015.
In addition to Maart’s optimism, goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma echoed similar sentiments, stating that the current squad has what it takes to break the trophy drought.
“We grew up watching Chiefs winning trophies every season… I believe that with the way we are playing now, we are going to change this trophy drought,” Bvuma remarked.
As the team prepares for crucial fixtures ahead, including their CUFA Cup match and subsequent league games, there is a palpable sense of excitement among supporters.
The Chiefs’ management is keenly aware of the pressure to deliver results and restore pride to a club steeped in history.
With Maart leading by example and a rejuvenated squad ready to tackle challenges head-on, Kaizer Chiefs appear poised for a significant season. Fans eagerly await whether this could finally be the year they see their beloved team reclaim its status as a dominant force in South African football.
