Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain, Ronwen Williams, has narrowly missed out on the prestigious Yashin Trophy, with Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez securing the award.
Williams, who became the first African-based goalkeeper to be nominated for the award, had a stellar 2023/24 season.
He played a pivotal role in Sundowns’ successful domestic campaign, helping the club defend their Premier Soccer League title with a record-breaking 73 points.
The Brazilians also clinched the inaugural African Football League and reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.
On the international stage, Williams was instrumental in South Africa’s bronze medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
His consistent performances throughout the season earned him a place among the top ten goalkeepers in the world, a remarkable achievement for a player based in Africa.
While Williams may have missed out on the Yashin Trophy, his nomination is a testament to his exceptional talent and the growing recognition of African football.
As he continues to excel for both club and country, Williams is poised to inspire future generations of African goalkeepers.
