Cavin Johnson, the former interim head coach of Kaizer Chiefs, has openly expressed his regret over accepting the coaching role at the club last season.
In a series of candid interviews, Johnson revealed that the “SOS call was too premature” for him, and if given the chance again, he would have declined the offer.
Regrets Over Accepting the Kaizer Chiefs Job
Johnson, who previously served as the Head of Academy at Kaizer Chiefs, was brought in to take over the first team on an interim basis midway through the 2023/24 season.
However, the experienced tactician now admits that it was the “wrong time” for him to take on the challenge.
“I do think that in one moment the SOS call was too premature for me and if I could do it again I would say no,” Johnson stated.
Facing a “Minefield” at Kaizer Chiefs
The former Amakhosi coach described his time at the club as walking into a “minefield without knowing where the bombs were.”
Johnson struggled to turn the team’s fortunes around, as Kaizer Chiefs continued to languish outside the top two positions in the league. Despite his best efforts, the interim manager was unable to guide the club to the success they had hoped for.
Backing Himself as Kaizer Chiefs’ Long-Term Solution
Despite the difficulties he faced, Johnson still believes he is the “right man for the job” at Kaizer Chiefs. The 62-year-old coach remains confident in his abilities and is hopeful that he will get another opportunity to lead the club in the future.
“I’m still the right man for the job,” Johnson asserted.
