Chiefs Urged to Capitalize on Sundowns’ Turmoil
Former Kaizer Chiefs stalwart Willard Katsande has thrown down the gauntlet to his old club, urging them to seize the opportunity to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns following the departure of head coach Rulani Mokwena.
The Brazilians, who dominated the DStv Premiership last season, have undergone significant changes with Mokwena’s exit and the departure of several key players.
Katsande believes this period of transition could present a golden opportunity for Chiefs to challenge Sundowns’ dominance.
“I’ve been closely following Sundowns, and it’s clear that many players were deeply attached to Rulani. They shared a special bond,” Katsande said on the Arena Sports Show.
“The question now is whether they can move on quickly. We all know it takes time to adjust to new circumstances, and psychologically, it might affect their performance.”
The former Chiefs midfielder highlighted the importance of seizing the moment for rival teams, including his former club.
“This is the perfect time for teams like Chiefs to close the gap on Sundowns,” Katsande emphasized.
“While Sundowns have experienced coaches in Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi, the departure of Mokwena could still have an impact.”
Katsande acknowledged the challenges Chiefs faced against Sundowns last season, losing three out of four encounters. However, he believes the current situation at Chloorkop could level the playing field.
“Chiefs need to take advantage of this moment and challenge Sundowns for the title,” Katsande concluded. “It won’t be easy, but it’s an opportunity they can’t afford to miss.”
As the new DStv Premiership season approaches, the stage is set for an intriguing battle between Chiefs and Sundowns, with the Glamour Boys looking to capitalize on their rivals’ transitional phase.
