Former Kaizer Chiefs star Khama Billiat has opened up about the circumstances surrounding his departure from the club, revealing that he was offered a salary cut as part of a contract extension.
The 34-year-old Zimbabwean forward, who now plays for Yadah FC, left Chiefs in June 2023 after a disappointing spell at Naturena.
Despite his previous success with Mamelodi Sundowns, Billiat struggled to replicate that form at Amakhosi, failing to secure any trophies during his tenure.
In an interview with MhlengiSports, Billiat explained that he was not opposed to the proposed salary cut but felt overwhelmed by the pressures of constant injuries and the club’s overall challenges.
“You know how negotiations go,” Billiat said.
“I felt like it was time for me to move back home. They [Chiefs] wanted me to stay, but I don’t think I was mentally strong to take another season again, with all the injuries I was getting, all the pressure. It was frustrating.”
Billiat admitted that his injuries had taken a toll on his mental health, making it difficult to perform at his best.
He added that the constant scrutiny from fans and the media had also contributed to his decision to leave Chiefs.
“I want to play so much, contribute so much, but I was getting so many injuries,” Billiat continued.
“I would’ve loved to stay. I didn’t mind the salary cut, I appreciate. I would have stayed, but I just felt like it was too much for me to take, there was a lot going on.”
The departure of Billiat marked the end of a chapter for Chiefs, who had hoped to retain one of their most experienced and talented players.
However, the club’s struggles and Billiat’s personal challenges ultimately led to a mutual decision to part ways.
