Orlando Pirates defender Bandile Shandu has acknowledged the fierce competition for the right-back position at the club, expressing his excitement about the depth and quality within the squad.
The Soweto giants have a formidable group of right-backs, including Shandu himself, Thabiso Monyane, Thabiso Lebitso, and recent signing Deano van Rooyen.
Last season, injuries to Shandu and Lebitso opened the door for Monyane to establish himself as the primary option at right-back.
To bolster their defensive options, Pirates brought in Van Rooyen from Stellenbosch FC during the off-season. Both Monyane and Van Rooyen have been the preferred choices at right-back so far this season.
Shandu, who has been sidelined for nearly 11 months due to a long-term injury, recently returned to action in a friendly match during the international break.
While he is still working on regaining full fitness, his comeback is a significant boost for Pirates.
Lebitso, another defender recovering from an injury, has begun running as part of his rehabilitation program. His return to the squad will further intensify the competition for playing time at right-back.
According to FarPost, Shandu has embraced the challenge of competing with his teammates for a starting spot. He believes that the healthy competition will drive everyone to perform at their best.
“It’s great to have so much depth in the right-back position,” Shandu said.
“Everyone is pushing each other to improve, and that’s what makes us a stronger team.”
Pirates’ strong defensive options will be crucial as they aim to challenge for domestic and continental titles this season.
The competition for the right-back position is likely to remain intense throughout the campaign, with the best players ultimately earning the opportunity to represent the club.
