Kaizer Chiefs’ quest for a new left-back hit a snag as Stellenbosch FC denied their interest in Fawaaz Basadien.
Amakhosi, undergoing a squad revamp, are actively seeking reinforcements at the position following departures like Sfiso Hlanti.
Chiefs reportedly inquired about Basadien’s availability, but Stellenbosch, aiming for a strong showing in five competitions including the CAF Confederation Cup, made it clear he’s not for sale.
This forced Chiefs to shift their focus, ultimately securing a deal with Orlando Pirates for Bongani Sam.
Sam’s arrival comes after Chiefs reportedly halted talks with Angolan defender Anderson Cruz. The 26-year-old Sam offers a younger option compared to Basadien (27), potentially aligning better with Chiefs’ long-term plans.
While Sam represents a solution, Basadien’s unavailability highlights the difficulty in Chiefs’ rebuilding process.
With aspirations of reclaiming their lost glory, securing top talent remains a challenge, especially when faced with clubs like Stellenbosch who are determined to hold onto their key players during a busy season.
