Kaizer Chiefs have shifted their focus to Kenyan striker Michael Olunga as their pursuit of Fiston Mayele appears to be hitting a roadblock.
With the transfer window approaching, the Soweto giants are eager to bolster their attacking options and believe Olunga could be the missing piece.
The club’s initial target, Mayele, has become increasingly difficult to acquire. Pyramids FC’s reluctance to sell following the departure of Fagrie Lakay has complicated negotiations, making it unlikely that Chiefs will be able to secure the Congolese striker.
“At the moment, the Fiston Mayele mission looks impossible,” a source close to the club revealed.
“After losing Fagrie Lakay, Pyramids FC don’t want to lose Mayele as well.”
With Mayele seemingly out of reach, Chiefs have reignited their interest in Olunga.
The 30-year-old has been in impressive form for Al-Duhail SC in Qatar and has a proven track record of scoring goals.
His contract with the Qatari club expires in June 2025, making him a potential target for Chiefs.
Head coach Nasreddine Nabi is keen to add a striker to his squad to complement Ranga Chivaviro. While Wandile Duba can play in an attacking role, Nabi views him more as a winger than a traditional number nine.
“The main focus in January is on a striker, and since it’s becoming clear that they may not get Fiston Mayele, they have reignited the Michael Olunga interest,” a source explained.
Olunga’s goal-scoring prowess and experience make him an attractive option for Chiefs.
The club will need to navigate negotiations with Al-Duhail to secure his signature and bolster their attacking options for the remainder of the season.
