Kaizer Chiefs will put their excellent form to the test this weekend as they face SuperSport United in the first round of the Carling Knockout Cup.
The match, scheduled for Saturday evening at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, will mark Chiefs’ first competitive cup match of the season.
Amakhosi, who have been without a trophy for a staggering nine years, have shown renewed promise under the guidance of coach Nasreddine Nabi.
The Soweto giants are eager to make a statement in the competition and secure their place in the last eight.
SuperSport United, led by experienced coach Gavin Hunt, are also hungry for silverware. The Matsatsantsa have endured a trophy drought of their own and will be looking to capitalize on the opportunity to make a deep run in the Carling Knockout Cup.
The two teams will face off twice within a week, with their league encounter scheduled for the following Saturday.
Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, who previously played under Hunt at SuperSport, expressed his excitement about the reunion.
“It’s always exciting to play SuperSport and also our former coach (Gavin Hunt), a guy who knows the ins and outs,” Petersen said.
“I think this is the start for us; it’s the first trophy up for grabs for us. I think we have started off on the right footing and we want to go on.”
For Chiefs to emerge victorious in the Carling Knockout Cup, they will need to overcome SuperSport United and navigate a challenging path through the competition.
While rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns received more favorable draws, Chiefs will face stiff competition from the outset.
Can Nabi lead Chiefs to long-awaited cup glory? The answer will be revealed in the coming weeks as the Soweto giants battle for a place in the quarterfinals and beyond.
