Wandile Duba, the promising 20-year-old forward for Kaizer Chiefs, has opened up about the challenges of adapting to a new position under coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Duba, who has played in all three matches of the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League season, acknowledges the difficulties of transitioning from his natural striker role to playing as a winger or even a wingback, depending on the game strategy.
In an interview, Duba expressed his willingness to embrace any position for the team but admitted that playing as a wingback is particularly challenging.
“That’s a difficult role, I don’t want to lie,” he stated, highlighting the physical demands and tactical awareness required in that position.
His comments reflect a broader understanding of the pressures faced by young players in high-stakes environments like Kaizer Chiefs, where expectations are immense.
Duba’s journey at Chiefs has not been without its hurdles. He was promoted to the senior team under former coach Arthur Zwane and initially thrived as a striker.
However, with Nabi’s arrival and the introduction of Ranga Chivaviro as the primary forward, Duba has had to adapt his game.
“I found out this season that I can actually play as a winger,” he noted, attributing his versatility to his speed and mentality. Despite these adjustments, Duba remains focused on contributing to the team’s success.
The Chiefs have had a promising start to the season with two wins and one loss, and Duba has already registered an assist. His determination is further fueled by personal challenges; after losing his mother, he aims to honor her memory by excelling on the field.
Duba’s reflections also draw comparisons with fellow young talent Relebohile Mofokeng at Orlando Pirates, who has enjoyed a more stable environment and greater success.
While Mofokeng has made significant strides with multiple appearances and contributions, Duba remains committed to improving his performance amid the pressures of playing for a club in transition.
Looking ahead, Duba’s adaptability and willingness to learn under Nabi could be pivotal for both his career and Kaizer Chiefs’ ambitions this season.
As he continues to navigate these changes, his growth will be closely watched by fans eager for silverware in 2024/25.
