Dylan Kerr, the former coach of Marumo Gallants, has issued a stern challenge to Kaizer Chiefs striker Ranga Chivaviro, emphasizing the need for him to convert scoring opportunities.
Despite Chivaviro’s recent form, where he netted two goals in his last three Premier Soccer League matches, Kerr believes he should be doing more.
Chivaviro, 31, has been in impressive form in recent matches, netting two goals in the last three Premier Soccer League games. However, Kerr believes the forward is squandering numerous opportunities to score more.
The experienced coach, known for his no-nonsense approach, insists that a striker’s primary job is to find the back of the net. If Chivaviro cannot fulfill this responsibility, Kerr has suggested that he might as well watch the matches from the stands.
“When a new coach comes in, everyone wants to impress,” Kerr told SNL24.
“But Ranga has shown improvement. He looks fitter, quicker, stronger. He looks like he has had a good pre-season.”
Despite Chivaviro’s recent goals, Kerr remains critical of his missed chances.
“He should have scored three against Marumo Gallants, he could have had a couple against AmaZulu, he got one against Sundowns, he could have scored two,” Kerr added.
“Unless you give Ranga opportunities, he might as well sit in the stands with me. Any striker that is given ammunition to score goals will score more than they will miss. You’ve got to give him that ammunition, give him crosses into the box, make sure if he plays on the shoulder of the defender, you give him the ball in the right areas, so he can use his pace, his power.”
Kaizer Chiefs, under the guidance of their new coach Nabi, have made a promising start to the season, collecting six points from their first three league matches.
However, Kerr’s comments serve as a reminder that the club’s success will ultimately depend on their ability to convert chances into goals.
