Kaizer Chiefs’ pursuit of Cape Town Spurs winger Asanele Velebayi has received a major boost from club legend Doctor Khumalo, who believes the 21-year-old could be a valuable addition to the Glamour Boys’ squad.
The young attacker impressed in his debut PSL season with Spurs, catching the eye with his pace, skill, and creativity. His performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with Chiefs reportedly keen on securing his services.
Khumalo, a respected figure in South African football, has backed the potential move, highlighting the new technical team’s focus on youth development.
“I have watched him play in the COSAFA Cup and also some games for Cape Town Spurs,” said Khumalo.
“The information I have is that the new technical team really wants to work with youth. Probably, that’s the reason why they opted for him.”
The former Bafana Bafana star’s endorsement comes as Chiefs look to rebuild their squad under new coach Nasreddine Nabi.
The club has already brought in Rushwin Dortley from Spurs and is reportedly looking to offload several players to create space for new signings.
However, Chiefs face stiff competition for Velebayi’s signature, with both local and international clubs interested in the talented winger.
Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou confirmed the interest, stating, “There are a few teams that want him now, the thing is there is interest from overseas as well for most of my players.”
Efstathiou also revealed that at least three other South African clubs have expressed interest in Velebayi, making the race for his signature even more competitive.
While the Spurs CEO acknowledged the possibility of Velebayi’s departure, he emphasized that the player is currently focused on pre-season preparations.
With the transfer window still open, Chiefs will need to act swiftly if they hope to secure the services of the highly-rated youngster.
