Sithole’s Move to Gil Vicente: A Missed Opportunity for Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs have missed out on the signing of promising midfielder Sphephelo “Yaya” Sithole, who has joined Portuguese club Gil Vicente on loan, according to the player’s agent Manuel Tomas.
Tomas revealed that while there were ongoing discussions between Sithole’s camp and Kaizer Chiefs, the South African giants failed to submit an official proposal.
This delay allowed Gil Vicente to swiftly finalize a deal with a pre-season deadline looming.
“We were in talks with Kaizer Chiefs, but they didn’t submit an official proposal,” Tomas said.
“We informed them of our urgency due to the upcoming pre-season and finalised the deal with Gil Vicente within hours. Unfortunately, in football, time is crucial.”
Sithole’s move to Gil Vicente reunites him with former coach Tozé Marreco, under whom he previously excelled at Tondela.
The loan deal includes an option for a permanent transfer at the end of the season, and Tomas expressed optimism about the chances of a permanent move, stating, “The chances are high. However, we’ll take it day by day, as the club has the necessary conditions.”
During his time with Tondela last season, the Bafana Bafana international featured in 27 matches across all competitions, contributing two goals and two assists.
Tomas believes that under Marreco’s coaching style, Sithole will continue to play the same style of football as he does for the national team.
Kaizer Chiefs were looking to strengthen their midfield options, but their slow response in formalizing their interest with an official proposal ultimately cost them the chance to sign Sithole.
The player’s agent emphasized the importance of time in football, stating that they had to make a quick decision to finalize the deal with Gil Vicente.
As Kaizer Chiefs continue their search for midfield reinforcements, they will have to learn from this experience and act swiftly to secure their transfer targets in the future.
The club’s failure to submit an official proposal in time has resulted in the loss of a promising young talent who has now joined a European club.
