Johannesburg – After weeks of speculation and intense rivalry between Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, midfielder Nhlanhla Mgaga has made his decision, choosing to join the Buccaneers in a free transfer deal.
Mgaga, a 28-year-old playmaker, was a sought-after free agent after his contract with Stellenbosch FC expired. Both Pirates and Chiefs were eager to secure his services, with each club presenting enticing offers.
In a surprising turn of events, Mgaga opted for the Sea Robbers, citing their ambitions for next season and the opportunity to play in the CAF Champions League as key factors in his decision.
“I am thrilled to be joining Orlando Pirates,” Mgaga said in a statement released by the club. “This is a big club with a rich history and passionate fans.
I am looking forward to contributing to the team’s success and hopefully winning some trophies.”
Mgaga’s arrival is a major coup for Pirates, who are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of a challenging campaign.
The midfielder’s creativity and technical ability are expected to add a new dimension to the team’s attack.
Pirates’ coach Jose Riveiro expressed his delight at securing Mgaga’s signature, stating, “Nhlanhla is a talented player who will add value to our team.
He is a proven performer in the PSL and has the potential to become a key player for us.”
The news of Mgaga’s decision has left Kaizer Chiefs fans disappointed, as they had hoped to see the midfielder donning the famous gold and black jersey.
However, the club is expected to continue their pursuit of other transfer targets in the coming weeks.
With Mgaga now on board, Orlando Pirates will be hoping to mount a serious challenge for the DStv Premiership title next season.
The Soweto Derby, already one of the fiercest rivalries in African football, is set to become even more intense with Mgaga’s switch to the Buccaneers.
