Kaizer Chiefs have unveiled a star-studded squad of former players who will take on Bloemfontein Celtic legends in a highly anticipated curtain-raiser to the Toyota Cup.
The clash of titans is set for Sunday, July 28, at the Free State Toyota Stadium, with kickoff at 12:30 PM, ahead of the main event between Chiefs and Young Africans.
A formidable lineup of Chiefs legends, spanning the golden eras of 2000 to 2020, has been assembled for the nostalgic encounter.
Goalkeeping duties will be shared by Brian Baloyi and Aubrey Mathibe, while the defensive line boasts the experience of Cyril Nzama, Bevan Fransman, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Derrick Spencer, and Fabian McCarthy.
The midfield is a veritable treasure trove of talent, featuring Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Willard Katsande, Josta Dladla, Thuso Phala, Mandla Masango, Jabu Mahlangu, and Stanton Fredericks.
Leading the attack will be the formidable trio of Collins Mbesuma, Bernard Parker, and David Radebe.
Thabo Mooki, who guided Chiefs to a league title against Celtic at the same venue in 2005, will be at the helm as head coach.
The former midfielder expressed his excitement about returning to the scene of his triumph and facing off against old rivals.
“I vividly remember winning the league title against Celtic at the Toyota Stadium in 2005,” Mooki said.
“We have a number of players in our team who always enjoyed playing Celtic and this game will be no different.”
Mooki also welcomed the inclusion of returning legends and new additions to the squad, emphasizing the opportunity to showcase a variety of talent.
“We are happy to have Siphiwe Tshabalala, Fabian McCarthy, and Stanton Fredericks back, and are buzzing to have Bernard Parker in the team for the first time,” he added.
As the anticipation builds for the legends’ clash, fans can expect a thrilling spectacle filled with nostalgia and competitive spirit as two iconic South African clubs go head-to-head once again.
